What the number can tell you
BMI relates weight to height. When a high BMI reflects excess body fat, particularly around the waist, it can be associated with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. Sleep apnoea and joint problems may also be relevant. These associations do not tell you whether you have a condition.
What it cannot tell you
BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat or show where fat is carried. Interpretation needs weight history, waist size, symptoms and other measurements. NICE uses lower overweight and obesity thresholds—23 and 27.5—for South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African and African-Caribbean backgrounds. Older adults may need particular care to protect strength and nutrition.
A MANAGEABLE NEXT STEP
What you can do today.
- Look at the broader picture: blood pressure, family history, eating habits, movement and any recent weight change.
- If weight reduction is appropriate, agree gradual changes and practical support with your clinician. Avoid setting a target from BMI alone.
- Start with one sustainable food or movement habit that fits your circumstances. Avoid crash diets and seek support if eating or weight causes distress.
What to discuss with your doctor.
- How should we interpret my BMI alongside waist size, muscle and background?
- Are any checks appropriate given my wider risk factors?
- What support would help, and how will we measure progress beyond weight?
When to seek help.
Unintended weight loss, a persistent change in appetite, or loud snoring with marked daytime sleepiness deserves a conversation with your doctor. A BMI in the usual range does not rule out illness.
